(Sept 12, 2019.) This years annual AME Conference and Skills Challenge was held in Toronto last month. Myself and two other female AMEs were selected to represent the Jazz Vancouver maintenance base. We rocked our custom made t-shirts as our team uniforms which were inspired by the aviation pioneer herself, Rosie the Riveter. What made this year special was that we were the first ever all female team to compete.

There were a total of 10 teams that competed from companies such as Air Canada, WestJet Encore, KF Aerospace and Jazz. Each team was also paired with a student from local technical schools in the area, our student was from Algonquin College. It was the first time attending this event for all of us which made us feel very nervous at first. Each team had to complete 10 different skills challenges. Teams were given 20 minutes to complete each challenge and got scored on their performance & technique. Once we got over our nerves we had such a great time and we were determined to do our best. Some of the skills that we were tested on were lockwiring, CARs knowledge and avionics skills.

I was so honoured to be a part of the first all female team and it was more about the representation for women in aviation but the cherry on top was that we placed 3rd! We couldn’t believe it when they called our team name it was an extremely proud moment for everyone on our team. A lot of the other teams were very supportive and congratulated us on our victory which was great. The student that was on our team also won an award for being the top student. Flightpath graciously donated and awarded him with a spot on an aircraft type course of his choice! Overall it was an exciting full day of fun and I’m so thrilled we got the opportunity from Jazz to represent and showcase female AMEs. There are only 2% of women in Canada who are AMEs and by going to these events and having representation is one of the ways we can help increase that number.
