Where are they now: Scholarship Winners

Oct 25, 2016

Meet Lauren, winner of the “BCAC Airport Committee Airport Ops/Mgt Training Scholarship” – 2014

At a young age Lauren was fascinated how an airplane could bring her from one continent to another.  She enjoyed travelling and knew she wanted to work for an airline with discounted flights to take her around the world.

After graduating from Airport Operations at BCIT, Lauren started working with Securiguard in aviation security at YVR.  Her role as Public Safety Officer includes watching for suspicious people and activity throughout the airport; she makes sure everyone feels safe.  Everyday there are different challenges at the airport and every event turns into a valuable learning opportunity to help prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Receiving the scholarship made Lauren feel honoured and she was thrilled to know that her efforts were recognized.  It provided her with the motivation to study even harder and share her experiences with others.

When asking Lauren about specific highlights she is proud of, she talks about her education experience at BCIT.  She thought the instructors were great motivators who often encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone and didn’t just instruct classes, but also taught life lessons.  The constructive feedback always helped Lauren.  Now she wants to thank her instructors for helping her get to where she is today and where she will be in the future.

What would be your advice for individuals applying to receive a scholarship?

“Definitely step out of your comfort zone and try any opportunities offered to you. Helping the community is as important as your education. Having a good attitude is more important than your grades.”

What would you like to say, in general, to past donors?

“Thank you for your generous donations as it means a lot to a student.”

What would you like to say to encourage potential new donors?

“Please help students out if you can because money should be the least worry of a student. Everyone deserves a fair access to education.”
