Beyond Preclearance: A New Vision for a Secure and Efficient Border

In keeping with CILTNAs’ goals of educating its’ members and promoting professionalism in the transportation and logistics fields, the Pacific Chapter is organizing it’s Fall Reception/Presentation as our next event. It will be held at the Terminal City Club on Wednesday, October 23 from 5:00-7:00 pm

I’m delighted to announce that our Guest Speaker will be Gerry Bruno, Vice President, Federal Government Affairs, Vancouver International Airport Authority (YVR). Gerry’s theme will be “Beyond Preclearance: A New Vision for a Secure and Efficient Border”. Gerry is well known to many of you. He has led innovation in the preclearance sector with Canada-US border agencies for many years and has played major roles in the development of NEXUS and other customs clearance initiatives, many of which originated at our own Vancouver International Airport.

Gerry leads the Beyond Preclearance Coalition group of bi-national organizations with a vested interest in advancing efficiency and security of the Canada-US border. Together they commissioned a White Paper to explore opportunities going forward. The Coalition now has 57 members on both sides of the border with $500k in corporate sponsorships. Border Summits at Vancouver and Washington, DC, have led to 10 working groups to advance short term initiatives of the White Paper.

To achieve the vision of a predictable, secure and integrated border, the group has identified eight game changers in technology that will form the building blocks for the evolution of border management:

  • Next-generation biometrics
  • Remote and multi-use screening
  • Drone networks
  • Blockchain
  • Real-time and artificial intelligence
  • Mobile smartphone apps
  • Autonomous vehicles

On behalf of the Pacific Chapter, I invite you to attend our upcoming reception (with sit down presentation); I know you will enjoy hearing from Gerry, and you will, no doubt, become avid supporters of the Beyond Preclearance Initiative in the future.

Reception cost is $55 for non-members, $45 for members and $40 for students. As with previous events, we ask for your generosity in sponsoring students in Transportation/Logistics, International Business and Aerospace/Aviation, BCIT, UBC and Capilano U. Students are our leaders of tomorrow and they so appreciate the opportunity you give them to attend Pacific Chapter events.
