GUEST SPEAKER: MICHAEL BENSON, PROVINCIAL AIR TANKER PROGRAM, BC WILDFIRE SERVICE
Michael Benson is the Superintendent of the Provincial Airtanker Program with the BC Wildfire Service in Kamloops, British Columbia. In this role Mike is responsible for the provision of province-wide aerial fire control capability utilizing teams of tactical birddog aircraft and fixed-wing tankers to protect BC’s assets and infrastructure. Mike is the British Columbia representative to the Wildfire National Aviation Working Group that sets to build aviation capacity and consistency at a national level.
Since starting his career with government as a wildland fire fighter many years ago, Mike has taken on several different roles including International Cooperation Specialist, Air Attack Officer, and the Superintendent of Aviation Management. Having applied his skill-sets supporting other agencies across Canada, the US, Australia, Mexico, Greece and Argentina; he has gained an appreciation for the challenges facing fire management agencies around the world.
Mike’s conversation with the BCAC will focus on some of the challenges and success of the benchmark 2017 wildfire season through the lens of the airtanker program.
