Re: Proposed Changes to the Aircraft Maintenance and Aircraft Structures Technician Training Programs

In April of this year we introduced you to the Aerospace Industry Human Resource Committee and the work it is doing, in cooperation with transCDA, to gather labour market information and update apprenticeship-training programs for the aerospace sector in BC.

Since that time, the committee has been actively gathering labour market data, researching Canadian and International best practices for apprenticeship models and compiling recommendations for apprenticeship program delivery. These recommended amendments to both programs are summarized in a document entitled Recommended Changes to Aircraft Maintenance and Structures Apprenticeship Training in British Columbia.

Highlights of the proposed changes include:

Explicit realignment to Transport Canada and Industry Training Authority standards with greater emphasis on meeting industry needs

Shift to a competency based format

A new challenge option, enabling those with prior experience, to earn a Provincial Certificate of Qualification

Introduction of standardized Provincial Certificate of Qualification exams, to ensure consistent competency

transCDA to act as the sponsor for unemployed apprentices, and assist with matching of employers and apprentices

Formalizing multiple options to technical training

Introducing a new Provincial Certificate of Qualification for the Aircraft Manufacturing sector (Aircraft Manufacturing Technician)

Your input is critical to ensuring that these programs meet the needs of all stakeholders, particularly employers who are best qualified to determine which skills are required in today’s workplace.

We ask that you review www.tcda.ca/documents/final_benefits_report.pdf – and complete the associated survey by September 30, 2010.

If you have any questions, please contact Greg Shorland at transCDA at 604-998-4510 ex 2402 or gshorland@tcda.ca.

Thank you for your support and feedback.
