Richmond’s Moray Bridge has reopened, but traffic around the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) remains heavily congested.

The low-level swing bridge, which connects Grant McConachie Way on Sea Island, where YVR is located, with Sea Island Way on Richmond’s Lulu Island, was shut down after suffering “mechanical problems”, according to a tweet from Richmond RCMP. According to Cpl. Dennis Hwang, the bridge was briefly shut down due to what appeared to be a misalignment after opening and closing earlier in the day. That issue has now been resolved and the bridge is once again safe to cross.

Traffic, on the other hand, remains a mess, with some commuters reporting they haven’t moved in over 30 minutes. The bridge closure snarled traffic on Sea Island, prompting warnings to drivers from the Mounties, DriveBC, and YVR, and while traffic volume will now begin to decrease, travellers, especially those wary of missing a flight, are still urged to take alternate routes.

In a tweet during the brief bridge closure, YVR even advised people to leave their vehicles at home and take transit instead.

“We’re advising everyone coming to and from YVR to take the Canada Line if possible,” the airport said. “The Moray Bridge closure is causing heavy traffic congestion on Sea Island.”
