Silver Wings Pivots to November-Long Scholarship Celebration

posted 14 days ago.

The uncertainty of large indoor events caused by the virus means we had to pivot from our live Silver Wings Industry and Scholarship Awards Celebration at the Vancouver Convention Centre (above). The entire month of November has been, and will be, about our Silver Wings Scholarship Celebration – with a Hangar Hangout thrown in for good measure.

The BC Aviation Council runs and funds the second largest aviation and aerospace scholarship program in Canada. The Council also manages the largest aviation and aerospace scholarship endowment in the country. At $450,000, the fund is nearly half way to its 2025 goal of $1 million. Most importantly, $70,000 worth of Student awards will be distributed in 2022. Online applications will be accepted from January 1st to the end of May.

However, there is unfinished business. Both the scholarship class of 2020 and 2021 still need to be celebrated. That’s about 40 scholarship winners deserving of recognition.

To accomplish this, November’s Silver Wings Scholarship Celebration includes:

  • Reaching out to the entire industry to support a major silent auction that showcases what aviation and aerospace have to offer;
  • Production of this introductory Frequent Flyer eNewsletter for our 3600 Supporters;
  • Distribution of four Frequent Flyer Special Editions, each highlighting 7-9 scholarship winners;
  • There is a licensed 50/50 draw and Air Canada raffle featuring tickets for two anywhere in their worldwide network. This major prize includes all fees and taxes. Check out RAFFLE. Net proceeds support expansion of the scholarship program and rebuilding BCAC services. You must purchase tickets from within British Columbia;
  • The Council is very pleased with how our silent auction has pulled together the aviation and aerospace industry. Check out AUCTION. As with the 50/50 draw and Air Canada raffles, net proceeds support expansion of the scholarship program and rebuilding our services for our Supporters. You can bid from anywhere on the globe;
  • There will be new scholarship announcements and insights into how awards are decided;
  • A live Silver Wings Hangar Hangout at Helijet’s YVR base is being planned.

Silver Wing’s presenting partner remains Vancouver International Airport (YVR) which is greatly appreciated. Each of the four special Frequent Flyer eNewsletters has also has a highlighted sponsor: YPK, YYJ, YLW and Crowe MacKay.

What happened to the Industry Awards? They remain on Covid hold. The feeling of the Selection Committee is that while aviation and aerospace continues to be so disrupted, every company that survives is an award winner. Our hope is that the industry awards return in late 2022.

There is still time (4-5 days) to commit to a $625 Community Logo Sponsorship or contribute an item to the silent auction. The Sponsorship Opportunities Package is available from Dave@BCAviationCouncil.org and contains the details about how you can support scholarships and the Council.

A reminder that the BCAC is a quality registered tax charity. All personal donations are eligible to receive an official Canadian tax receipt.

Here’s to a celebratory November.
