October 20, 2017 (Vancouver, BC): At the annual Silver Wings Awards on October 25, the British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) will honour and highlight the many achievements of its members, industry leaders and the youth who benefit from the $28,500 awarded in scholarships this year. “Aviation plays a key role in the economy and safety of our province,” says Heather Bell, BCAC Chairman. “BCAC is proud to support the aviation industry through our scholarship program and privileged to honour those among us who have made a difference with their contributions.” BCAC’s premier event, the Silver Wings Awards, will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at Vancouver Convention Centre West, 1055 Canada Place, beginning at 6 p.m.
About the winners:
· Entrepreneur of the Year in Aviation: Craig Murray, Nimmo Bay Resort, for his contributions to B.C.’s tourism industry and transportation sector.
· BCAC Environmental Award in Aviation: Masset Municipal Airport, for implementing a solar electric system in 2016 to save energy.
· Back and Bevington Air Safety Award: Cathy Press, Chinook Helicopters, for a strong culture of safety incorporated at Chinook Helicopters.
· Robert S. Day Award: Teara Fraser, Iskwew Air Inc., for leadership and development of the aviation industry, including initiatives to engage and empower women, youth and Aboriginal Peoples in the industry.
· William Templeton Award: Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, for airport development at Tofino airport to include new landing lights to allow night flights.
· Lifetime Achievement: Terry Rea, YVR Tower, Nav Canada, for his passion of the aviation industry and lifetime of contributions. Terry will be celebrating 50 years of service in the aviation industry this August.
About the British Columbia Aviation Council
The British Columbia Aviation Council, established in 1938, is a member‐driven organization that represents and promotes the shared interests of the aviation community. It is a charitable society established under the Society Act and annually awards scholarships to students pursuing careers in aviation and aerospace; this year awarding $28,500. The Council has increased its emphasis on scholarship funding with the formation of a stand alone committee focused on charitable and legacy donations.
