Industry organization celebrates 75 years and recognizes aviation and aerospace leaders
October 29, 2013 (Vancouver, BC): The British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) today announced the winners of the Aviation Awards for 2013. The awards will be presented at the October 30th Silver Wings Awards gala along with $10,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the fields of flying, engineering and aviation management in programs from all over British Columbia.
“This year is particularly significant for the aviation community in B.C.,” said BCAC Chairman, Mark Duncan. “As we celebrate 75 years of representing aviation and aerospace, there is growing recognition that our industry makes valuable contributions to the economic well-being and growth of this province. By highlighting the accomplishments of individuals, companies and students, we shine a spotlight on the leaders of yesterday, today and tomorrow.”
About the winners:
- Entrepreneur of the Year: NGRAIN which, among other products, has developed 3D software-based technologies to support the design, assembly and maintenance of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft.
- Back and Bevington Air Safety: Claude Marchand of Conair for his significant contributions to air safety in aircraft operations, accident investigation and prevention, and flight training.
- BCAC Environmental Award: Victoria Airport Authority for the Reay Creek Restoration Project that has rehabilitated an important salmon habitat on the Saanich Peninsula.
- Lifetime Achievement: Garry Meier of Hawkair who has selflessly worked with young pilots, dispatchers, mechanics and others to help them advance their careers in aviation in this province.
- Robert S. Day Award: BCIT Aerospace Program for its outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of aviation in B.C., and whose programs graduate 200 job-ready personnel annually.
- William Templeton Award: Nelson Pilots’ Association which last year celebrated 100 years of flight in Nelson, and incidentally was also the location of the BCAC’s first annual meeting in 1938.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to making the aviation and aerospace industry a thriving and connected one in the province of B.C. over the last 75 years and more,” said Duncan.
